non ti posso descrivere il piacere che ho provo quando guardo il nostro sito e trovo tante notizie interessanti che riguardano Ustica. Quando ho tempo mi collego e so tutte le notizie.
Con la novena di Natale Nuccio Caserta mi ha fatto venire le lacrime agli occhi pensando a Rosa Natale che si posizionava nell’angolo (cantunera) delle strade e con il fischietto (friscaletto) invitava le ragazze ad unirsi a lei per andare in chiesa; ed io di corsa saltellando scendevo.
A noi si univa anche Anna Giuffria e noi prendevamo la scorciatoia ed entravamo dal portone (du purtuni) che dava sulla mia strada. Bei ricordi, Pietro, continua ad aiutarci a ricordare che per noi lontani è un gran piacere e i ricordi danno tanta nostalgia e invogliono a ritornare.
Spero, se il Signore mi da la grazia, di passare almeno un Natale con voi ad Ustica.
Le cattive novità però ci rattristano. Proprio poco fa, aprendo il website, ho appreso della morte della zia (za) Margherita; domani telefonerò a Maria Grazia . Oggi Santa Lucia ho visto la cuccia e tu sai che a me piace fare cose tradizionali della mia isola, ed in particolare quello che mi aveva insegnato mia mamma e per questo ho fatto, per ricordo, un libro con tante ricette.

This is the only family photo that survived our many hurricanes in New Orleans.
The man drinking his beer is my father Francesco Giovanni Spucches (Frank J. Spokes).
The man in the floral shirt is my uncle Guiseppe Spucches (Joseph Spokes, Jr.),
the woman on the far right is my grandmother Vincenza Percopo Spucches.
Her entire Percopo family came from Contessa Entellina. I’m sticking my head in front
of her for my 6th birthday. The Spucches boys are all connected to Ustica through their
maternal grandmother Caterina Tarantino 1875-1947. Her parents Rosa Manfre and
Nicolo Tarantino are from Ustica. Nicolo’s birth in Ustica has not been confirmed.
I’m sorry, Guiseppe was Rosa’s father. We have researched Guiseppe Manfre 1817-1899
from Ustica because he also migrated to New Orleans. We even know about his father Antonio.
It is Nicolo Tarantino’s connection to Ustica that is our mystery.
We may never find out about his family.
